Just because it’s legal, doesn’t mean it’s safe

We’re busy, I get that. Even during these days it’s as if there isn’t enough hours in the day to do what we have to do. A lot of our time is spent in our vehicle. Many drivers are so focused on getting to their destination they may not realize some of the risky things they do behind the wheel. Well, good thing I’m here.

Driving to work, running errands, driving home, it doesn’t end when we get behind the wheel. Some things drivers do become risky but technically are not illegal. So, if they aren’t illegal, what’s the big deal? The big deal is it could still cause a crash, causing injury to you or your passengers and perhaps even severely damage your vehicle. Sometimes as drivers we have to think about what’s right and safe instead of deciding if it’s legal or not.

For years I’ve heard many people say it’s illegal to do a lane change across an intersection. In many jurisdictions it is NOT illegal. It’s just considered unsafe. Well, sometimes it’s considered unsafe. If you’re going to do a lane change through the intersection you really need to ensure a vehicle approaching the intersection is not attempting to make a turn onto the road you’re traveling on. If there is no other vehicle at the intersection, you’re good to go.

Being aware of the traffic all around you is an important part of our job as a driver. If you’re changing lanes to the left, look for the wheels of the driver on your left at the intersection ahead on the left. If their wheels begin to move and angle toward your direction, you may want to wait to do your lane change until after you cleared the intersection. The same can be said about the driver on your right.

Glancing at the wheels to see the direction and movement. If you see movement, wait until after you pass through the intersection. Even glancing to see if the driver is looking your way does not guarantee they see you and will not turn as you change lanes. Any time you spot a vehicle at either side at the intersection, wait until you pass through the intersection safely before beginning your lane change. That, or do the lane change well before you reach the intersection. This will help the drivers at the intersection to see you early enough they most likely will not attempt to make that turn.

Despite what’s legal or not legal, doing the proper driving maneuver that’s safe is the right call, no matter where you live. Pay attention to the traffic around you so you can plan your route to make early and safe lane changes. We need that from you.
